Damaged and missing teeth don't only affect your appearance, they can also make it harder to eat and leave your other teeth without proper support. If you've chipped, cracked or lost a tooth, a dental crown or bridge could be the best solution to restore the look and function of your smile.
To find out more about dental crowns and bridges in Burwood and whether they're the right choice for you, call 02 9747 4322 to make an appointment with our dentists or book online.
A crown (or cap) is a custom-made dental restoration that fits perfectly over an existing tooth to restore or change its shape and appearance.
Crowns were traditionally made from metal, but in recent years, porcelain (ceramic) and porcelain fused to metal (PFM) crowns have been preferred, because the material looks just like real tooth enamel while still being strong and long-lasting.
Crowns may be fitted over teeth that have been chipped, fractured or worn down by erosion or teeth grinding, or they can be an alternative to a filling for larger cavities. Crowns are also used in other dental procedures, such as for sealing a tooth after a root canal and supporting a bridge.
To make sure your crown is a perfect fit, our dentists in Burwood will take impressions of your tooth and the surrounding teeth and use these to design your custom restoration.
We'll place a temporary crown over your tooth while your custom crown is being made, which can take up to a week. We'll then arrange a fitting appointment where our dentists will check that your crown feels comfortable before bonding it over your tooth.
A dental bridge (or fixed bridge) is an artificial tooth or teeth that fills the gap left by one or more missing teeth. Like crowns, bridges may be made from porcelain, a mix of porcelain and metal, all metal, or other materials.
A bridge may be an option if you want a more permanent tooth replacement option than partial dentures, but you don't want the expense of a dental implant.
Bridges are also custom made to fit perfectly into gaps between your teeth, restoring your bite and supporting the neighbouring teeth. Our Burwood dentists take impressions of your mouth and use these to design and manufacture your custom bridge.
A bridge may be attached in the mouth in a few ways. A traditional bridge is supported by crowns which are fitted over the two teeth on either side. Bridges in the front of the mouth that won't be under as much pressure from chewing may only need to be supported on one side or by clasps attached behind the neighbouring teeth.
If you think you could benefit from a crown or bridge and you want to know more about your options, call our team at Burwood Dental Centre on 02 9747 4322 or contact us online.
